Varicose Veins vs Spider Veins

Laser Vein
Germantown Aesthetics is proud to offer its Memphis patients an array of treatment options for their spider and varicose veins. At our Vein Institute we offer both sclerotherapy services as well as laser ablation services to eliminate the appearance of unwanted veins.

Both male and female patients visit Germantown Aesthetics seeking treatment for their veins – although some patients are often confused regarding what type of vein they are seeing as well as which treatment is most appropriate for them.

Spider veins are small, broken veins that appear as thin, red or purple clusters. Spider veins often appear around the ankles, knees, thighs or even on the face in some patients. Spider veins are purely cosmetic concerns and in most cases are treated with sclerotherapy – which is not covered by insurance.

Sclerotherapy works by injecting a saline like solution directly into the small, broken vein. This solution is absorbed by the vein causing it to immediately “die” and become absorbed by the surrounding healthy skin tissues and disappear from view. Your aesthetician may recommend more than one sclerotherapy treatment session depending on the prominence and number of spider veins on your body.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is another treatment method, more commonly used to treat what are known as varicose veins. Unlike spider veins, varicose veins can present potential health risks if left untreated. Varicose veins are enlarged and protruding veins that often appear on the legs. They often appear to be bulging just below the skin’s surface and are much more noticeable than spider veins. Varicose veins can cause restriction in blood flow and therefore it is recommended that they be professionally and medically treated.

Both spider and varicose veins are more common among patients with a family history of the conditions as well as those who are overweight, pregnant, extremely sedentary, or who have jobs that require long periods of standing and stress to the legs.
